James Wade is aiming to finish the McCoy’s Premier League Darts season with a flourish when he bids to be crowned as champion for the second time.
The 2009 winner has admitted his relief at finishing in the play-off places after a shaky end to his league campaign but is confident of bringing his best game to Thursday’s finals night at the O2 in London.
The world-number four faces league leader Michael van Gerwen in the semi-finals, with the winner taking on either Phil Taylor or Raymond van Barneveld for the title.
“I have probably only played well for about five games this season but I’ve managed to make the top four and I’m ready for a sprint finish.” said Wade, who earned a draw with Taylor last week to seal qualification.
“The draw in Newcastle was bigger than any win I have had this year because I delivered when it really mattered and that gives me great confidence going into the semi-final.
“Michael (van Gerwen) is playing brilliant. He’s a top player but I’m also pretty good myself and he hasn’t been in this position before.
“I think my record in this competition shows I’m better than average but also the other three are well above average as well. I don’t think anyone can confidently pick a winner out of the four of us.”
Seven-time PDC major winner Wade, who reached the semi-finals last year, is hoping to grab glory and kick-start another trophy trail in 2013.
“This is my second favourite tournament behind Blackpool and I’d love to win it again,” he added.
“I set myself a target of winning two major tournaments this year and hopefully this will be the first of them.”
